Body Blitz Spa – Health by water

Ladies, if you need a couple of hours of soaking, and you don’t mind being ‘men free’ for a spell, check out the women’s only Body Blitz – Health by Water, one of  Toronto’s few water therapy spas.

Playing pool

The focal point of this 11,000 square-foot warehouse space is the cavernous pool area. It contains three different types of pools and is pure watery bliss. Or should that be blitz?

The circuit begins with a warm soak in the Dead Sea Salt pool (don’t miss the jets on the sides that will give you an excellent lower back massage) and is followed by steam, infra-red sauna and the hot Green Tea pool. All stages should be interspersed with invigorating (and painfully shocking) plunges in the cold pool.

It’s fun and relaxing but don’t discount the healing factor of Body Blitz. Each stage of the circuit is designed with wellness in mind.

The Benefits:

Dead Sea Salt: Full of vital nutrients and minerals, it soothes skin, relieves joint and muscle pain and relaxes.

Steam: Increases circulation, cleanses and aids the respiratory system.

Infrared Sauna: Regular saunas are so over. Infrared waves are said to be more efficient at promoting sweat – ie detoxing – which helps move out even those deep-seated toxins. Bonus: Good for cellulite.

Cold Plunge: Re-energizes and when combined with heat treatments, is believed to boost immunity.

The powerful myth of the women-only enclave

For centuries all-women enclaves have been seen as places of strength and renewal, such as the mysterious Isle of Avalon where a dying King Arthur was brought to have his wounds tended by the witchy Morgan La Fey (sure, you thought she was bad, but she was actually a healer, so please, rethink your legend).

Water and women

While water therapies go back to ancient times, so do the myths of formidable female societies. Think of the Sirens, those seductive (and wicked) temptresses who lived out on an island in the sea, luring unwary sailors to their death.

The idea of the powerful world of women didn’t end with the ancients, it has followed us into modern pop culture. Take Paradise Island, the hidden secret island where Wonder Woman lived with her fellow Amazons in peace and harmony. And don’t forget the island of beautiful women in the James Bond movie, Octopussy – peopled by lithe fearsome females who belonged to theOctopussy cult.

It seems that as far back as people can remember, women and water have made a potent mix – all the more reason for places like Body Blitz Spa.

Need to know:

Options: Guests can choose to do just the water circuit ($54) or combine it with treatments (prices vary). Spa treatments include facials, scrubs, muds and body bakes.

Check out: Their  unique scrub ‘n mud bar has a selection of custom made scrubs and muds so you can pick your own potions.

Don’t miss: the juice bar – get the perfect tonic to sip while you relax in a red vinyl lounge chair.

Take your blitz home: 100% Canadian made, Body Blitz products combine natural elements of earth, sea and botanicals. Available in the gift shop.

Deal: Water therapy is only $44 on Tuesdays.

Dress code: Clothing is optional, but many people wear bathing suits.

Where is it? Body Blitz is at 471 Adelaide St. West (between Spadina + Bathurst), Toronto

Telephone: (416) 364-0400
