Multi-frequency radiofrequency technology for anti-aging

The world of medi-spas can be a confusing place and it helps to understand the various high-tech therapies on offer. One of the most interesting developments in the field of anti-aging and skin firming is multi-frequency radiofrequency (RF) technology, said to tighten sagging skin, reduce wrinkles and give skin a firmer appearance. But what is it?

Calling in the expert

To understand what radio frequency is and what it can do for the skin, I turned to Marina Vaskevich of the Viora Clinical Department. Trained as a dermatologist in Belarus, she is also the owner of Med V Spa in Toronto, a training centre for Viora Canada, as well as a clinic in Belarus, and has given lectures around the world in the area of radiofrequency and aesthetic medicine.

Marina, how does radiofrequency work?

There are two targets for radiofrequency energy: fibroblasts (cells that produce collagen) and adiposities (fat cells). RF energy gently heats the cells to stimulate new collagen production and cause the death of fat cells.

My clinic uses the Reaction Machine, a new body-contouring machine on the Canadian market. Made by Viora, it combines radiofrequency energy with something called vacuum therapy to boost the body’s natural regeneration process.

Reaction goes a step further, using three distinct radiofrequency treatment modes. This helps to target tissue at different depths. This is important because the depth of the dermis (the layer of the skin where fibroblasts localize) is different in the face and the body, in men’s and women’s skin and in the areas of the forehead, eyelids and jowls. So by using different frequencies it’s possible to concentrate the energy on different levels.

What the heck is vacuum therapy?
In order to influence these processes (fibroblast stimulation and adiposities cells necrosis) we need to improve the blood circulation in the target area. Studies confirm that the best way to improve blood circulation is to use vacuum mechanical massage. Vacuum massage improves blood circulation and boosts the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the tissue. It also activates the lymph drainage system, which removes retained water and waste products from the tissue.

What areas of the body does RF technology target?
The Reaction Machine has two programs, ReLift for the face and neck, and ReFit for the body. ReLift targets wrinkles, sagging skin, naso-labial folds and fat along the neck and jowl line – it’s a good alternative for those who don’t want to inject Botulotoxin. ReFit targets cellulite, sagging post-pregnancy skin and loose skin caused by excessive weight loss.

How long does it take to work?
Depending on the area, 3-6 sessions are required. One session lasts about half an hour.

Is there any down time?
No downtime, which is just one of the reasons it’s so popular.

So there you have it, folks. Multi-frequency RF technology in a nutshell – yet another tool to add to your anti-aging toolbox.
